Benefits
Fellows are offered the following benefits as part of the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship.

- Master Level Stipend: $55,505.84 per year
- Doctoral Level Stipend: $70,905.90 per year
- The stipend is a fixed non-negotiable amount.
- Stipend is paid in bi-weekly installments totaling 26 pay periods annually.
- The stipend is a taxable amount. CSTE assumes no tax liability. Fellows will not receive any tax forms such as Form W-2 nor Form 1099 at the end of the calendar year. CSTE will provide an annual summary of stipend payments for each calendar year you are a part of the program. CSTE is unable to provide tax, financial or legal advice of any kind. Fellows should direct all questions regarding taxes to their personal tax or financial advisor.
Up to $2,000 will be provided for host site visit expenses.
Up to $2,000 will be provided for moving-related expenses of at least 50 miles.
Up to $2,470 per year is provided to each fellow for professional development. This stipend can be used for travel to meetings or public health conferences, short-term training programs, purchasing work-related books, and classes intended to aid in work-related projects.
CSTE does not directly provide health insurance to fellows. The CSTE stipend includes a health insurance allowance to each fellow to purchase their own health insurance. Health insurance is required by the fellow’s start date and throughout the program; proof must be provided to CSTE prior to the start date.
- Fellows are required and fully funded to attend the CSTE Annual conference each year of their fellowship. Fellows do not use their professional development allowance to attend the conference.
- Fellows are required to submit abstracts for the conference each year of their fellowship.
Fellows receive a free CSTE Membership during their fellowship. Fellows can get involved with CSTE subcommittees and workgroups which provide further connections with public health professionals at all stages of their careers.
Fellows benefit from the cohort model-fellows are connected to each other to build a peer network that spans the country and can learn from one another.
- Each fellow is matched to a designated host site and two highly trained and experienced mentors (primary and secondary mentors). Host sites are approved by CSTE and have demonstrated their ability to provide a fellow with technical training, research opportunities, and practical experience in the application of epidemiologic methods.
- Fellows work closely with highly trained and experienced epidemiologists at the state, territorial, local, and/or tribal levels, and experts working at the federal level.
- All fellowship graduates have secured permanent positions, and most are working in epidemiology at the state or local level.
- Graduates serve in leadership positions such as State Epidemiologist, Deputy State Epidemiologist, State HAI Coordinator, infectious disease and non-infectious disease programmatic leads, and AEF mentors.
- CSTE’s AEF fellowship graduates use their knowledge obtained in these programs to provide mentorship and leadership to future fellows and to the CSTE Executive Board.
- From the 20 classes of AEF fellows, many AEF alumni continue to support the growth of AEF by applying to be host sites to mentor future AEF fellows.
- AEF alumni also participate in CSTE activities and leadership roles which includes CSTE Executive Board positions, subcommittee chair positions, CSTE Early Career Professionals Mentorship Program, CSTE DSTT, and CSTE LEAD.
